Elizabeth Popham

Elizabeth Popham recently circled back to the visual arts after a career teaching Renaissance literature and culture. On her way back to her first love, she began with photography and drawing, and much of the inspiration for her paintings and collages comes from photos taken on long walks with her trusty Canon Rebel T7i. She has benefitted immensely from the community of artists associated with the Meta4 Contemporary Craft Gallery in Peterborough, summer workshops at The Gallery-on-the Lake, outings with an intrepid group of “en plein air” painters during the COVID slowdown, and, more recently, studio sessions at Studio 201 (formerly Kawartha Artists Gallery and Studio). Working primarily in acrylics – sometimes combined with pen and ink – and photographic decoupage, she is drawn to the elegance of shape and line, whether in botanical studies, portraiture and life drawing, or landscapes. Her favourite subjects could be called “micro-landscapes” or “natural abstracts”.
